Three times may be the charm for Britney Spears and "How I Met Your Mother."
With Spears making her second guest appearance on the abruptly popular CBS comedy, the show's co-creator, Craig Thomas, tells THR.com that Monday's episode was written to leave the door open for the pop singer to make a return appearance next season.
"She was better than the first time, and I think the fans will enjoy it because her return answers a larger mystery set up earlier in the series," Thomas said. "So there's a good plot reason why she's there. And when people watch Britney's second appearance on the show they'll see that the door is still open for her to come back."
Spears' first visit resulted in "Mother" hitting its highest rating ever. The show has since maintained an elevated audience level compared to last year. Once considered on the bubble for a fall renewal, the critically acclaimed comedy is now considered a lock to return next season.

There may be a thaw in the formerly contentious relationship between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, suggests K-Fed's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan.
Spears, who last week was awarded more visitation time with her sons by Federline (Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1), was the topic of discussion for Kaplan, on Monday's Today show.
Kaplan said that the judge's decision at last week's ruling reflected an "improvement" in Spears's condition. She spent full days, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., on both May 8th and Mother's Day with her sons.
Asked about the current status of the relationship between the couple – including the rumor they would again star together on a TV show – Kaplan sidestepped any direct answers, instead saying that any potential reconciliation between Spears and Federline would be for the sake of their sons. (Britney makes her second appearance on CBS's How I Met Your Mother Monday night.)
"If you're going to have two parents participate in the lives of raising their children," said Kaplan, "there has to be some camaraderie between them for that to be a meaningful expectation and reality."
But are things better between the ex-husband and wife?
"When you go from where things were, when there was no visitation, to where they are now," said Kaplan, "there will be some contact … there'd be some ability to exchange a camaraderie that is necessary and a function of co-parenting together."

Britney Spears makes her much-anticipated return to How I Met Your Mother next week and, judging by this sneak peek, it's just in time for Barney to enlist Abby the receptionist in his ongoing quest to win Ted back.
Which, apparently, Abby doesn't mind because, despite the whole sweater-twins thing, she still obviously has it bad for Ted.

Britney Spears Makes Surprise Visit to "Rock The Cradle"
Britney Spears surprised "Rock The Cradle" contestants Thursday night by unexpectedly showing up for the season finale to support her former manager and friend Larry Rudolph.
"Rock The Cradle" pits aspiring pop stars, who have rock and roll in their DNA, against one another. The finale, which was broadcast on MTV, featured Jess Blaze Snider, son of Dee Snider; Crosby Loggins, son of Kenny Loggins; and Chloe Lattanzi, daughter of Olivia Newton John. Rudolph judged the competition.
Spears spent the duration of the show seated backstage surrounded by security. After the show, Rudolph told usmagazine.com, "She was here to support the show. I mentioned to her that I was going to my show. She said, ‘I want to come down.’ She loved it. She really loved it. She didn't come here for publicity or anything like that. She came here because she wanted to see the show, which I appreciated."
Spears headed to the show after spending the day with her two sons, Jayden James and Sean Preston. It was the first extended visit since she, along with her parents Lynne and Jamie Spears, appeared in Los Angeles County Superior Court Tuesday for a custody hearing, where she was granted extended visitation rights by Commissioner Scott Gordon.
Smiling and looking tanned and relaxed - Britney Spears is back to her best.
Gone are the blank eyes, stripper outfits and erratic car rides round LA - the fallen pop princess is finally back in the driving seat.
Looking happy and healthy, the star is clearly determined to get her career back on track.
Pounding the treadmill every day at Bally Total Fitness Gym, the 26-year-old is still carrying a few pounds, but now she looks toned.
Former manager Larry Rudolph is telling people: "She's in great shape. She could end up having the biggest comeback in history."
Brit's new single Break The Ice reached number 15 in the UK charts, while her latest album, Blackout, has sold over two million copies worldwide.
And now Madonna's revealed she is a fan. "I love Britney's new album," she said. "I work out to it."
And it's not just Brit's career that's on the up. On Tuesday the singer's legal team will go to court to fight for greater visiting rights to the two young sons she lost custody of to ex-husband Kevin Federline.
It's all a far cry from being the world's most public celebrity burn-out case when she was hospitalised twice this year and arrested. She was finally taken into psychiatric care when she refused to hand Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, 19 months, to police. The bitter custody battle for her boys has driven Britney to ever more bizarre behaviour.
Her appearance at the MTV Video Awards was another low. Dressed like a lap-dancer in black sequinned bikini, a flabby Britney fluffed her dance steps and forgot the words.
Finally, after being called "a danger to herself", Britney saw the light. Her parents flew in to look after her, and with Rudolph took out a restraining order on manager Sam Lutfi - who's accused of manipulating the singer.
The reconciliation with Rudolph may be crucial to her rehabilitation.
It was his guiding hand that make Baby One More Time a global hit.
Rudolph said this week: "Everybody wants to see the world's greatest entertainer back on stage."
And influential LA gossip columnist Perez Hilton declared in typically grandiose style: "She is reborn!"
